Will no-one rid me
of this troublesome priest?
Mae’r ddrama Murder in the Cathedral (1935) gan T.S.Eliot (1888-1965) yn trafod merthyrdod Thomas à Becket (1118-29/12/1170), archesgob Caergaint. Mae’r stori datblygu hyd nes i Becket cael ei lusgo i mewn i ddiogelwch y gadeirlan gan dri offeiriad i’w achub rhag milwyr y brenin. Mae’r offeiriaid yn cloi’r drws yn dynn, ond gyda hyder anorchfygol y ffydd, mae Becket yn mynnu:
Unbar the doors! Throw open the doors!
I will not have the house of prayer, the church of Christ,
The sanctuary, turned into a fortress ...
The church shall be open, even to our enemies...
We are not here to triumph by fighting, by stratagem, or by resistance, not to fight with beasts as men. We have fought the beast and have conquered. We have only to conquer now, by suffering.
This is the easier victory.
Now is the triumph of the Cross, now open the door! I command it. OPEN THE DOOR!
Mae Becket yn wynebu ei ddiwedd gan ymddiried nid mewn grym ond mewn ffyddlondeb - ffyddlondeb i’r hwn a orchfygodd pob drwg, a hynny nid trwy nerth bôn braich ond, yn a thrwy gariad.
